Sanctuary Chairs

Updated: Sep 27, 2023

Arguably the most memorable story, relating to our sanctuary chairs, involves President Jimmy Carter’s visit to the church in 1979. As recounted by Rizek Abusharr (the Session Clerk), “President Carter said he did not want to sit in the front row, so I led them to a row behind. As I handed him the Bible I noticed that by chance I had chosen for him the seat which had on it the name ‘Cairo’”. By sheer happenstance, the purpose of his visit to the Middle East was to explore the options for peace in the region and as part of that process he was travelling to Cairo the next day.
